About Natchitoches
Welcome to historic Natchitoches, a progressive city possessing the southern charm and hospitality of a congenial small town. Pronounced “Nack-a-dish,” this idyllic city may be known to many as the film location for the movie Steel Magnolias. Natchitoches has received many acclaims including “… the best little town in the USA,” by Oprah Winfrey. Don’t let the laid back pace of Natchitoches fool you, there is plenty to do in this small yet vibrant town.
History
Natchitoches was first settled in 1714 and remains the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. By the 1800s, the area grew as cotton and tobacco became the prevailing source of commerce. Large plantations sprang up throughout the region, some of which are available for tour. Today the town attracts people of all ages, some of whom may attend Northwestern State University, others enjoy the area’s stable employment, and many remain active in retirement with endless cultural and civic events and volunteer opportunities.
Shopping
Natchitoches’ cobblestone Front Street runs parallel to the Cane River and its riverbank town park. Front Street is filled with shops and galleries all reflecting the unique character of Natchitoches and greater Louisiana. A must visit is to Kaffie-Frederick, a hardware store paradise originally established in 1863.
Lodging
With so much to see and do, you can’t do it all in one day. Fortunately there are more than 30 bed and breakfasts in town, each offering a step into the past that only turn-of-the-century architecture can provide. Many are just a short stroll from Front Street, but each offers its own unique take on Southern hospitality.
Cuisine
Cajun and Creole are spoken here. As is Sushi, with the opening of the new Hana restaurant. Traditional Southern recipes blend perfectly with the tastes of current culture and distant lands. Be it the famed Natchitoches meat pies from Lasyone to the exquisite brunch at The Landing, your tastes buds will surely think they’re in heaven. Enjoy the Rendezvous’ Taste of Natchitoches and sample the food that made Louisiana famous.
Festivals
There’s always something going on in Natchitoches. After our Rendezvous event, the renowned Festival of Lights begins on November 21 and runs through early January. Don’t pass up this chance to see the city’s downtown district in all its glowing splendor. A well-deserved thanks to Larry Cooper, airport manager, and his crew for all the hard work involved in putting on this event. We also want to thank Debbie Tebbetts for her great job organizing the Kid's Hangar. And a special thank you to the City of Natchitoches and Parish Tourist Commission for all their assistance.
We'd also like to thank Brian Callia of BND Hobbies and Tom Burkheimer and the Demons Remote Control Club for an awesome job decorating the Hangar Dance with the cargo parachute and RC planes.
